17-year-old American artist, Billie Eilish, has released news of her highly anticipated debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
Eilish’s chilling album cover for WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, out 29 March.
Eilish released her new single, ‘bury a friend’, on the 30th of last month. Her soft, breathy, yet powerfully strong vocals collide beautifully with the strong beats and bass that swirl together in euphoric harmony. The layered, heavily structured vocals complement the eerily creepy content of the video; the dark and unsettling undertones both within the song and her music video have begun to set the mood for the rest of her album through her horror-esque vocals and corresponding visuals.
Her music video, directed by Michael Chaves, is set in a dreary, run-down, abandoned apartment building. Eilish is portrayed as the monster under the bed, as stated in a press release on the 30th. She is pushed, pulled and stabbed with needles accompanied with lyrics surrounding death “honestly I thought I’d be dead by now.” The demonic character played by Eilish can be equated to Chaves’ other horror projects- such as the Conjuring 3, set to be in movie theatres in 2020.
In the same press conference, Eilish gave out information stating that this “monster under the bed” is determinative of the rest of her album to come. With her current direction in her own genre of pop music through the likes of her other singles, ‘you should see me in a crown’ and ‘when the party’s over’ (gaining number 8 on Triple J’s Hottest 100) also featured on the album, Eilish’s debut is set to be nothing like anything the pop music industry has seen before.
Eilish’s album, pulled from the chorus of ‘bury a friend’, is set to be released on the 29th of March this year.
